How to Crop in Procreate

Cropping and resizing your canvas is one of the many tools you can perform on Procreate. Having the ability to make a canvas smaller, bigger, or a different shape can add flexibility as you develop your artwork. In this blog post, I will share a simple, step by step process on how to do this in Procreate. If you are more of a visual learner, a quick video is provided below:

There is a key item to know about cropping and resizing in Procreate. When you crop your canvas with artwork already drawn and you are making the canvas smaller, all of your layers with your artwork will be cropped too. Once you crop and exit your artwork, you can’t go back to the original artwork or size. So before you crop or resize, I highly recommend duplicating your artwork to ensure you have a copy of the original. Now, let’s dive in!

  1. Open the Procreate app and select a new or current artwork.

  2. Select the Wrench tool and click on “Crop & Resize.”

  3. You can begin cropping the canvas manually by selecting a corner or center.

  4. You can also go to Settings to make adjustments. You can do the following:

    • Enter specific canvas dimensions: This allows you to change the height and width of the canvas by entering specific dimensions. If you do this, your canvas will be cropped automatically from an edge and you can adjust manually.

    • Adjust the resolution: You can reset the DPI (resolution) of your canvas.

    • Toggle Resample Canvas: Turning this on will engage the Aspect Lock which will preserve the aspect ratio (relative width and height).

    • Toggle Snapping: Turning this on will engage the grid snap feature if you would prefer to manually crop and resize your canvas.

    • Rotation: This allows you to rotate the canvas up to 45 degrees to the right or left.

  5. You can also perform the following options.

    • Cancel: Cancel and exit the entire crop feature.

    • Reset: Reset the canvas size and resolution back to the original.

    • Done: Save all your changes.
